Reading IFirst Light
Before there was a sky, there was a colour that behaved like one.
First Light is the moment a spectral system becomes visible to the instrument. It arrives as a slow tide of indigo turning to cyan, the way weather arrives: from everywhere, at no particular hour.
Reading IISpectral Drift
Every band drifts. None of them ask permission.
A dominant band migrates across the field like a front. We do not steer it. We measure where it has been and guess, politely, where it is going next.
| Time | Band | nm | Drift |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:12 | indigo | 451 | +0.06 |
| 09:47 | cyan | 497 | +0.11 |
| 14:20 | chartreuse | 556 | +0.09 |
| 19:03 | amber | 588 | -0.04 |
Reading IIIThe Impossible Band
The Impossible Band
A colour the eye files under memory, because it has no name to file it under.
It sits between chartreuse and rose, where no single wavelength should hold, and it holds anyway. The instrument records it faithfully and refuses, just as faithfully, to classify it.
Reading IVAfterimage
Look away. The colour stays a moment longer than the light.
Afterimage is the reading the retina takes without asking. The field dims, the front passes, and for a breath the sky is still the colour it no longer is.
The Archive
Recorded Readings
A partial catalogue of spectral events logged by the station.
- HW-04072419.03.11
Slow Indigo
A tide with no front. Held the eastern glass for nine hours without moving.
- HW-04312419.06.02
Cyan Interval
The clearest reading of the season. Colour so even it read as silence.
- HW-04472419.08.19
The Impossible Band
Recorded in full. Classification withheld. See Reading III.
- HW-04582419.09.30
Chartreuse Squall
Fast, bright, gone by dawn. The station logged it and forgave it.
- HW-04722420.01.14
Amber Standing
A warm front that refused to leave. We stopped measuring and watched.
- HW-04892420.02.27
Rose Afterimage
Only visible after looking away. The retina filed it before the instrument did.

A Visit
The observatory keeps no register of who arrives. It keeps only colour.
There is nothing here to sign. Stand at the glass and read the weather with us.
